S10 grayscale mode

Android devices come with a grayscale mode which can be activated to save battery. The said mode is also present on some other newer smartphones. The way this works is fairly simple. Your GPU renders elements only in black and white instead of full bit color resulting in less power consumption.

However, most devices do have a grayscale mode built-in. And we can show you how to enable Android grayscale mode on your device. But if your device happens to have an AMOLED display, enabling the hidden grayscale mode setting in Android, or Monochromacy to be exact, actually has some benefits. Since each individual Pixel lights up in various colors on an AMOLED display, limiting that to just black meaning zero power loss and shades of white can, in theory, improve battery life.

For instance, the Google Pixel and the OnePlus 5 could take advantage of this. According to former Googler Tristan Harris, a black and white display can help cure your smartphone addiction by making the screen less appealing.

For the uninitiated, these are hidden by default on Android smartphones. You should see a toast message telling you that you are now a developer, which would mean the Developer options has been enabled.

Go back to the Settings page and you should now see Developer options towards the bottom of the screen. Tap on it and select Monochromacy from the pop-up list that appears.

Your screen should immediately turn black and white at this point. Anything you view on it will be just as boring and dull. But hey, it might help you save some battery if you really need to juice out every last bit of power out of it.

Remember though that this is simply an overlay of sorts, which means your GPU is still rendering everything in full bit color. This becomes more evident when you take a screenshot and view that screenshot on another device. But if you know someone with a Smartphone addiction, who probably has no idea about this hidden setting you might be able to help them out.

The way it works is simple: If your graphics chip only has to render elements in black and white instead of full bit color, it won't consume as much power. But Google's Pixel and Nexus phones don't have a grayscale mode — at least, not officially.

They do, however, have a hidden setting that will turn your screen black and white just the same. This option may not have the same power-saving benefits as a true grayscale mode option would, because it's still unclear if it works at the GPU level or as an overlay.

But there's another advantage of turning your screen black and white: According to former Googler Tristan Harrisenabling grayscale mode can help cure your smartphone addiction by making the screen less appealing.

So if you'd like to try it out to see if it helps with battery life, or if you're starting to think your smartphone usage is getting out of hand, I'll show you how to access and enable this hidden grayscale mode on your Pixel or Nexus device.

Samsung Galaxy S10, S10+, S10e Tips, Tricks & Hidden Features

First up, you'll need to enable the hidden "Developer Options" menu on your Pixel or Nexus. To do that, head to About phone in Settings, then scroll down and tap the "Build number" entry seven times in rapid succession. If you do this right, you'll see a toast message that says "You are now a developer!

Next, head back to the main Settings menu, then scroll down and select the "Developer options" entry towards the bottom. From there, scroll down and find the Hardware accelerated rendering section, which is close to the bottom of this menu. At the bottom of the Hardware accelerated rendering section and just above the Media sectionselect the "Simulate color space" option. From here, choose "Monochromacy" on the popup, then your screen will immediately enter grayscale mode. From now on, everything on your screen will be in black and white.

Again, this may or may not offer any actual battery savings, but it's certainly worth a shot. But in my opinion, the main advantage is the fact that it can help reduce your smartphone usage — with that black and white screen, you'll be less inclined to scroll through your favorite social media apps endlessly.

When you're ready to turn grayscale mode back off, just repeat Step 2 above, except this time choose "Disabled" on the popup.

It's not quite as handy as a Quick Settings tile, but it's fairly easy to access, and it may very well have some serious benefits. What are your thoughts on Google's "grayscale" mode? We all want better battery life that pushes on past a day, while still delivering a big screen, media playback, and a whole bunch of other nicknacks too, such as heart rate monitoring, wireless audio, compatibility for smart watches, and great cameras. Ask owners of the iPhone 5 and 5S how much battery life they get out of their phones, and many will tell you of the problem of needing to charge daily.

Instead of just pulling back on the performance of the handset — which is basically what most power saving options do — Samsung has made the decision to shift to a lighter version of Android that only lets you run some critical apps such as the phonepulling back on the overall performance, and even dropping the amount of colours on screen, the latter of which brings the whole thing back to the days when things were in black and white.

With that in mind, people have tried all sorts of things to improve battery life of phones to take advantage of this concept in the past, such as using black wallpaper, monochromatic themes, and less scaling across colour spectrums, such as what Microsoft tries to do with its Windows Phone operating system and the block colours on black or white screens.

So we tried it one weekend, which is now possible after Samsung made a minor update to the Galaxy S5. Remember Me. Lost your password?

On the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, you can swipe your finger on the fingerprint scanner to pull down the notification drawer.

Since there is no fingerprint scanner on the back of the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus anymore, you will have to settle for just swiping down anywhere on the home screen to pull the drawer down, instead of having to swipe down from the very top which can be hard to reach. Now just swipe down from anywhere on the home screen to pull down the notification drawer.

This also works on the Galaxy S10ewhich has a capacitive fingerprint scanner. Because the Galaxy S10e has a traditional fingerprint scanner albeit on the side of the phoneyou can swipe your thumb down or up on it to control the notification drawer. The Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus have ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensors, which means the sensors sit under the glass on the front of the screen.

These sensors are secure, and can be used to access sensitive apps like the one for your bank or to authenticate payments using Samsung Pay.

The Galaxy S10e only can only rely on its capacitive fingerprint sensor. All three phones, however, also have another way to unlock the phone — facial recognition. Samsung went to great lengths to slim down the bezels surrounding the beautiful Dynamic AMOLED screen on all three smartphones, so why ruin it with the traditional Android navigation bar? For example, when you arrive home, you can set your phone to turn on volume alerts, and have different app shortcuts show up on the lock screen.

Want to use the volume keys to control media volume by default? The Dynamic AMOLED screens on the new phones natively reduce blue light emission by 42 percent, which is genuinely helpful as too much blue light at night can affect sleep, which can have adverse effects on health. But if you still want to use the blue light filter on the phones, you can schedule them to turn on automatically either at a certain time or just from sunset to sunrise.
